Cap Fréhel is one of the most dramatic headlands in northern Brittany. Pink sandstone cliffs about 70 metres high drop to the sea, topped by heathland that turns purple and yellow with heather and gorse in late summer. Seabirds including guillemots, razorbills and cormorants nest on the rocky stacks below.
The lighthouse
The current lighthouse, completed in 1950, stands beside a 17th-century predecessor. In clear weather you can see the Channel Islands from the cape.
Fort La Latte
About 4 km east, Fort La Latte (also called the Château de la Roche Goyon) is a medieval castle on a rocky promontory, reached by two drawbridges. It was begun in the 14th century and later strengthened under Louis XIV, and has appeared in films including The Vikings (1958). It's privately owned and open to visitors most of the year.
The walk
The GR34 coastal path links the cape and the fort in about an hour each way, one of the finest short walks in Brittany.
Tips
- Cap Fréhel is about an hour from Saint-Malo; parking at the cape is paid in season.
- The beaches of Sables-d'Or-les-Pins and Erquy are nearby.
