Brittany is too big to cover from one base, so most visitors choose two or three. Here's how the main areas compare.
Saint-Malo, Dinard and Dinan
Best for: first-timers, ferry arrivals, Mont-Saint-Michel. Saint-Malo has hotels inside the walls and along the Sillon beach; Dinard is more refined; Dinan is calmer and cheaper.
Pink Granite Coast
Best for: coastal walking and beaches. Perros-Guirec has the widest choice, from seafront hotels to campsites.
Finistère: Quimper, Crozon, Brest
Best for: wild scenery and Breton culture. Quimper is central for Cornouaille; the Crozon Peninsula suits nature lovers.
South Brittany: Vannes, Carnac, Quiberon
Best for: families and sunshine. Sheltered beaches, the Gulf of Morbihan and ferries to Belle-Île.
Rennes
Best for: short city breaks, train travellers and day trips.
Types of accommodation
- Gîtes (holiday cottages) are a Breton classic for a week.
- Chambres d'hôtes (B&Bs) are often in old stone farmhouses.
- Thalassotherapy hotels in Saint-Malo, Quiberon and Roscoff combine sea views and spas.
- Campsites are excellent and widespread.
