Around 40 islands and islets dot the Gulf of Morbihan, many privately owned. Two inhabited islands are easy to visit and lovely by bike or on foot.

Île aux Moines

The largest island, nicknamed the "pearl of the Gulf", is about 6 km long, with a pretty village, beaches, pine woods and a small stone circle. Ferries take just a few minutes from Port-Blanc in Baden and run frequently.

Île d'Arz

Flatter and quieter, with a coastal walk of about 17 km around the island. Boats leave from Conleau near Vannes.

Gulf cruises

From Vannes, Port-Navalo, Locmariaquer and Larmor-Baden, cruises tour the Gulf in season, some allowing stops on the islands. From Larmor-Baden, boats also go to the Neolithic Cairn de Gavrinis, famous for its carved stones.

Tips

  • Rent bikes at the ports; cars are not taken on the Île aux Moines ferry.
  • Strong currents make kayaking best with a local guide.
