Locronan's central square is lined with grand granite houses built by merchants who grew rich weaving sailcloth in the 16th and 17th centuries. Little has changed since, which is why the village is a popular film location. It's one of Brittany's officially designated Petites Cités de Caractère.

What to see

  • The 15th-century Church of Saint-Ronan and the adjoining Penity chapel with the saint's tomb.
  • Craft workshops including weavers, glassmakers and potters.
  • The walk up to the Montagne de Locronan for views over the Bay of Douarnenez.

The Troménie

Every July, pilgrims follow a route around the village; every six years, the Grande Troménie follows a 12 km circuit with banners and costumes.

Tips

  • Park in the paid car parks at the edge of the village.
  • Locronan is 20 minutes from Quimper and 15 from Douarnenez, birthplace of the kouign-amann.
  • The village is beautifully lit in December.
