Mont-Saint-Michel is about 55 km from Saint-Malo, roughly an hour by car, which makes it the easiest major day trip from Brittany's north coast.
Getting there
- By car: follow the coast road via Cancale for views, or the faster N176. Park in the official car parks on the mainland and take the free shuttle (Le Passeur) to the Mont.
- By bus: seasonal direct coaches link Saint-Malo and the Mont; year-round services run from Rennes station.
- On a tour: guided day trips from Saint-Malo include transport and abbey tickets.
When to go
Arrive before 10am or after 4pm to avoid the busiest hours. In summer the abbey often opens in the evening. On the highest spring tides, the sea surrounds the Mont for a short time: check the tide calendar.
In the abbey
Buy abbey tickets online to skip queues. Allow 1 to 1.5 hours for the church, cloister and great halls, and another hour for the ramparts and village.
Combine it
Stop at Cancale for oysters on the way back, or visit the Pointe du Grouin at sunset. See our full Mont-Saint-Michel guide.
