Josselin's castle is one of the most striking in Brittany. From the River Oust, which is part of the Nantes–Brest canal, it shows three massive round towers. Inside the walls, the courtyard facade is a riot of carved flamboyant Gothic stonework.
Visiting
The château has belonged to the Rohan family for centuries and is still lived in, so visits to the interior are guided. The gardens are open to visitors in season.
The town
Josselin's medieval streets, half-timbered houses and the Basilica of Notre-Dame-du-Roncier are worth a stroll. The towpath of the canal is a flat, peaceful route for walking and cycling.
Tips
Check opening dates before you go; the château closes for part of the year. Josselin is about an hour from Rennes and 45 minutes from Vannes.
