Bréhat is actually two small islands joined by a bridge, plus dozens of islets. Cars are banned, and thanks to a mild microclimate, gardens of hydrangeas, agapanthus and even palms flourish between the granite houses.

Getting there

Boats leave from the Pointe de l'Arcouest, near Paimpol, and the crossing takes about 10 to 15 minutes. Some trips include a tour around the island first.

Things to do

  • Walk or cycle (bikes can be hired at the port) to the Phare du Paon in the wild north, surrounded by orange-pink rocks.
  • Climb to the Chapelle Saint-Michel for views over the archipelago.
  • Find a cove for a picnic and a swim.
  • Visit the tide mill at Birlot.

Tips

  • It gets busy in July and August; the first boat of the day is best.
  • Paimpol, the nearby fishing port, is worth an hour on the way back.
