This short section of the GR34 is the most famous walk in Brittany. It follows the old path used by customs officers to watch for smugglers, winding through giant pink granite boulders sculpted by wind and waves.

The route

Start at Trestraou beach in Perros-Guirec and follow the coast west to the Mean Ruz lighthouse, built of the same pink granite, and on to the harbour and beach of Ploumanac'h. It's about 5 km one way on a well-made path, mostly flat. Many walkers return the same way or by the little road inland.

What to look for

  • Rocks with names like the Tortoise, the Witch and Napoleon's Hat.
  • The Maison du Littoral, a small visitor centre with displays on the rocks and wildlife.
  • The oratory of Saint-Guirec on Ploumanac'h beach.

Tips

  • Go early morning or in the evening when the rocks glow and the path is quieter.
  • Stay on the marked path to protect the fragile vegetation.
  • Combine with a boat trip to the Sept-Îles bird reserve from Trestraou.
