The Ville Close (closed town) is a fortified island in the middle of Concarneau's harbour, linked to the mainland by a short bridge. Its granite walls date mainly from the 14th to 17th centuries, with later work by Vauban.
What to do
- Walk sections of the ramparts for views over the port and the bay.
- Visit the Musée de la Pêche, a fishing museum that includes a real trawler you can board.
- Browse the shops and crêperies of the main street, Rue Vauban.
- Take the tiny passenger ferry across the harbour, one of the oldest in France.
Tips
- The Ville Close is free to enter; the ramparts walk may have a small charge in season.
- Concarneau's beaches, such as Les Sables Blancs, are a short drive away.
- Boats to the Glénan islands leave from the port in summer.
